Today, I want to talk about a verse that has transformed my life and become a guiding principle for me. My professional responsibilities in transportation planning have deepened my understanding of this verse. It has profoundly impacted me, reinforcing the idea that life can be predictable when guided by divine direction and personal commitment. I’ve always believed in the power of human dedication, commitment, and perseverance. Human beings possess exceptional capabilities that allow them to achieve what seems impossible through focus, planning, and unwavering commitment.
The verse that struck me highlights the importance of documenting a plan and the critical role of thoughtful strategizing. It states, “We plan the way we want to live, but only GOD makes us able to live it.” (Proverbs 16:9, MSG). Another version puts it this way: “The mind of man plans his way, but the LORD directs his steps.” (Proverbs 16:9, NASB1995).
The Importance of Planning
Many people fail in life not due to a lack of hard work or employment. Failures aren’t typically caused by a lack of intelligence or ability. Instead, people often stumble because they fail to allocate time for strategic thinking and planning. The difference between individuals lies not in their social status but in their ability to think strategically and create plans for significant goals they are committed to achieving.
The Consequences of Neglecting Planning
The most unfortunate individuals aren’t the poor or the socially marginalized, but those who neglect to set aside time to think about and plan for a meaningful cause in their lives. Strategic thinking and planning allow you to define your priorities and allocate your resources—time, talents, and money—accordingly. This approach is a highway to a successful life.
The Divine Promise
Furthermore, the second part of the verse offers a powerful promise to those who take the initiative to plan their lives, set priorities, and follow through. It says, “[…] but only GOD makes us able to live it.” or “[…] but the LORD directs his steps” (Proverbs 16:9, NASB1995). This promise addresses the elements beyond human control, such as obstacles, opportunities, threats, and unforeseen events, guaranteeing that a higher power—God himself—will guide and establish the steps of anyone who plans their life thoughtfully.
A Principle Beyond Theories
This principle transcends mere theories or human claims. When one knows their direction, God becomes involved in their journey, directing their steps, bringing supporters, facilitating relevant connections, and helping them avoid threats and pitfalls.
By embracing strategic thinking and planning, combined with divine guidance, we can navigate life’s complexities and achieve our greatest aspirations.
